Simply the Best

The first edition of this book is twenty years old. This totally revised edition is eight years old. But it remains the finest, most balanced presentation of Christian ethics out of the Roman Catholic tradition. And what I especially appreciated was that it's written in a clear and accessible style. Actually interesting!

Dissident Moral Theology

I saw this at a used bookstore and decided to pick it up, after all, with a title like Principles For A Catholic Morality it must be good right? Well, it has it's good points such as being easy to read and understand, but that is about it. If you just look at the substance of the book itself you'll find another dissident that says a whole lot of nothing and leaves you scratching your head at the end.

He questions the Magisterium and makes it seem like there has never been any infallible teaching on morals in the history of the Church, thereby opening up the Church to the moral and cultural rot of whatever time and place it finds itself in such as the enthroned moral relativism of our own time. When all is said and done you feel like the Catholic Church is a changeable institution that ought to keep up with the times, even if that means legalizing sodomy, abortion and assisted suicide.

The three stars are for the nice and easy way the book reads, not for any real substance. There are better books on Catholic morality out there such as Morality: The Catholic View by Servais Pinckaers, O.P. that are just as easy to read and aren't so one sided and unabashedly liberal.

About the Author
Thomas E. Wartenberg is a professor of philosophy at Mount Holyoke College, where he also teaches in the film studies program. He has published eleven books and anthologies including THINKING ON SCREEN: FILM AS PHILOSOPHY (Routledge), EXISTENTIALISM: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE (Oneworld), and BIG IDEAS FOR LITTLE KIDS: TEACHING PHILOSOPHY THROUGH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE (Rowman and Littlefield). He is the film editor for PHILOSOPHY NOW. He has had a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, a Senior Fulbright Research Fellowship, and a Leverhulme Trust Lectureship.

Great Breadth but Not Much Depth

Among the many anthologies of primary writings on the philosoohy of art, this text has one of the better ranges, as it covers many of the important and influential writers (and in the interest of variety, I suppose, some of the not-so-important writers) one would want to read on the subject.

The primary flaw of this text (aside from its ridiculously high retail price, currently about $90.00) is that depth is sacrificed (sometimes ridiculously) for breadth. The book devotes between 9-14 pages per author. Plato, for instance, gets only 11 pages despite the fact that he is clearly the single most influential writer on the subject. And of those 11 pages, Wartenberg includes only a small selection of the Republic devoted to the idea of art as imitation. If you relied on this text alone, you'd never know that Plato also pioneered the possibility of understanding art on the basis of its beauty, wrote about art censorship, constructed the template for Kant's notion of artistic genius, or a host of other things. By contrast, Kwame Appiah's post-colonial perspective--an interesting but narrow and trendy reading which, rather obviously, cannot compare favorably in importance or influence to Plato's--nevertheless gets 9 pages, almost as many as Plato gets.

This text is clearly aimed at students and offers short selections from 29 writers, organized chronologically but identified topically (i.e., Plato: art as imitation, Aristotle: art as cognition, etc.). Some selections (like Douglas Davis' riff on Walter Benjamin or Morris Weitz's application of Wittgenstein) are relatively novel inclusions in volumes of this sort. Others are anthology staples (like Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Tolstoy). If what you want is a taste of art theory, this book is a good choice. Variety is certainly its strength--not only a variety of writers, but a variety of ways of thinking about art. Other inclusions not previously mentioned are by Carolyn Korsmeyer, Dele Jegede, Adrain Piper, Douglas Davis, Freud, Bell, Collingwood, Dewey, Goodman, Danto, Dickie, Beardsley, Barthes and Derrida. The third edition makes a few minor revisions (and further abbreviates the Heidegger text), cuts Jegede, Barthes, and Davis to make room for selections by Berys Gaut, Suzanne Langer, Noel Carroll, Michel Foucault, and Dom Lopes.

You will want this for your book collection.

I originally purchased this book for an art course I was taking at school - I don't keep every textbook from classes, but this one is worth hanging onto. Some of the essays are a bit dry, but I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology overall. A lot of the reading is heavy and complex, so if you like the philosophies, theories and concepts of art, this would be a book to settle into.

It's a text book. However the price was far less than the ECU bookstore. Since I'm a philosophy major it was a necessity. Although my free Amazon Prime for students had expired (heads up students, check into it-it's a great deal!), shipping was cheap and fast too. The stars do not reflect the vendor, just the product itself - it's not the seller's fault that it's basically a boring text.

Mandy De Sandra is excellent at writing sex scenes, and hilarious quotes. Kim Davis is almost a sympathetic character in this...almost. By the end, I did feel a little bad for her.

Amazing like always

After Inferno, I really didn't know what to expect in Incendiary. I know it would be an emotional ride. Full of anger, tears, pain, heartbreak, hope and etc. But what I got it was much more.

The first pages into the story and we got one of the secrets revealed. And I can't express how horrific it was for Sloane. And how much my heart broke for him.

A lot of games going on. And it makes me confused. Who did what, with whom, behind who's back, who's hiding what, who's really is the enemy, who's a friend....Well, I think you got me.

My hate for Cassandra didn't changed. She was as sick, selfish, greedy bitch as ever. And not for a second I felt sorry for her. She got what she deserved. And I don't mention her, because she don't deserve to be remembered.

Georgie is still as alone as ever. You know that saying, you're in full room of people, but you feel alone. This really describes her. And at first I was so pissed, who not one person was fighting in her corner. Or at least it seemed.

Sloane, our broken, tortured rocker. Sometimes I really wanted to stab him with the fork at some of his actions and thoughts. But his love for Georgie always saved him. And in more than one way. She was his salvation. A reason to breath and enjoy a life. To finally have a home.

The more you saw into theirs life, the more you seeing, how similar their where. Don't trusting, but so needing that someone always be by their side. Someone who no matter what, will always love them. And they go a rough path, to find that special person. To find each other.

Kiln was as dick as ever. Especially to Georgie. And on those times I wanted to cut his nuts. I had an idea, why he's like that with her. And later it revealed, I was right. At first she was a target because of Sloane. Kiln saw he got a thing for Georgie. So, he wanted to do the same thing, what Sloane did with his wife. But when Georgie wasn't cooperative, no matter what Kiln did, he started to target her for her. Why? Because despite that she wasn't really in relationship with Sloane, Georgiana was always faithful to him. And that galled Kiln, because his own wife couldn't say the same. But did he redeemed himself enough at the end? I think he did. Saving a life of innocent is priceless.

There's going a lot of stuff. And I would really don't know where to start, if I started to talk about them all. A lot of twists, that makes you feel, like you're solving a puzzle. And I enjoyed ever sec of it.

Some people made to change my mind about them. At least a little. Other's still is on my s*** list.

I couldn't wait to see more of Phoenix rockers and theirs rocky road.

PS I was so happy to 'see' Death Dwellers crew. Especially my man, Psycho Stalker aka Outlaw/Christopher. Muah, babe.

Angst before the happy! Great!

You probably loved Inferno which is why you are planning to read this book. You will not be disappointed. All the crazy twists and turns finally coalesce into a fabulous HEA. I loved it. This is a keep-you-up-all-night-reading kind of book. I noticed one reviewer said this book was heartbreaking. I personally do not like books that break my heart so I just want to say that this book was the opposite of heartbreaking to me. All the bad guys get it in the end and the good guys triumph! I got happy tingles on the last page! I also really enjoyed seeing the Death Dweller characters at the end of this book. It really highlighted for me how distinct all Kathyrn Kelly's heroes are from each other. Their mannerisms, language, and outlook are all uniquely written but you cannot help but love them all (well except I have never really forgiven John Boy for Kendall). If you want some angst before your happy, I highly recommend this book.

Incendiary begins right where we left off in Inferno, with the aftermath of Sloane and Georgie's forbidden relationship. It’s forbidden for several reasons but mostly the age difference. When they meet she is sixteen and he is twenty-five. In this book she’s not quite eighteen and pregnant with Sloane’s baby and they are not together. It seems the age isn’t the only thing keeping them apart…..their families are a big issue and we find out even more about that in Incendiary.

Between the lies, accusations and ancient secrets it all creates an amazing love story in which two people fight to be together.

Georgie’s dad is a wuss, her mother is the worst evil bitch character I’ve ever read about (and that’s saying a lot!), her grandmother still calls all the shots, and Sloane is all over the media with women. This family is seriously cray cray! Georgie is an amazing character, she's so young, but has a maturity about her like she’s an old soul. She’s never known love - til she meets….

Sloane is the sexy, bad boy rock star with a past that is full of secrets and traumatic experiences. Sloane loves Georgie. I mean truly loves her. Will his father ruin everything? His father is a terrible awful character that controls the lives of Sloan & his siblings. The things he's done to his children most normal people couldn’t even dream up. Will Sloane decide to start making decisions himself? What will the fall out be if he does? Can he find his way back to Georgie?

Kathryn Kelly has such an amazing way of writing characters with extremely crazy situations. I for one got pulled into their world and felt like I was watching everything in real time. Even though her stories are somewhat dark and you want to scream at her, she finds a way to bring it all together. Georgie is such an amazing and relatable heroine, her story is not pretty but it is beautiful in strength. The author gives you glimpses of the young girl's age when she tries to deal with her infant daughter.

I love Kathryn Kelly's books and can't wait to see what she writes next!
