About the Author
Vicki Hopkins released her debut novel in November of 2009, The Price of Innocence. Controversial and true to historical times, set in late 19th century Paris, it tells the story of one homeless woman's struggle to survive. Her second in the series, The Price of Deception, was released in November of 2011, which continues the saga. The third in the series, The Price of Love, is schedule for release late summer 2013.

In addition to The Legacy Series, the author released The Phantom of Valletta in July 2010, which is a continuation of Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera. The story received recognition and a favorable review by The Sunday Times, Malta, because of its setting at the Royal Opera House in Valletta.

A frustrating read with an intriguing plot

This story is about a women name Charlotte Grey who was blinded at the age of eight in a cruel accident that was the fault of an unknown cruel boy. The accident left Charlotte bitter at heart towards the unknown boy as she learns to adjust to the limitations of blindness while trying to be as independent as possible. The story commence ten years later when Lord and Lady Rochester took an interest in Charlotte's welfare by throwing her a coming out party. This was partially due to the fact that the accident occurred on their property. Two brothers bid for attention of Ms Grey affections. Each have secrets and an agenda of his own as to why they would seek the attention of a blind woman. Would love occur with one of them especially when those secrets are exposed?

I really had mix feelings about this book. While I love Vicki Hopkins as a writer. I really hate her heroines. This book at a fantastic story behind it but the delivery of this story was so flawed that it left me nothing but frustration as a reader.

The three main characters had serious issues that prevents them from having a love relationship. The heroine was too naive to be believe even though she was blind. She expected everyone around her to revolve around her while she remain the center of her universe. I could understand that if she never had the capacity to see but that was not the case with her. She was not only unable to see, she was blind towards how independent she really was, and blind towards her ability to determine one's true character. She refused to listen to family members around her who she had to rely on for years. Yet too many times she ask for them to be her eyes.

Patrick felt extreme guilt around causing the heroine to become blind. That guilt was the reason he pursued her into becoming his wife. So little was told about his background as to how he transform from the boy who pushed her causing blindness to the man who accepted responsibility for his actions no matter the price to his self happiness. I did not doubt that he wanted to love her and at the same time was not sure if he really did love her. I know he did not trust her or he would have came out with his secret. It was extremely frustrating.

Rupert was the Patrick's brother who grew from the concern little boy who cared about his brother to a man without remorse or love for anyone after his brother left him to go to military school. Rupert had issues and struggles from his past. His intensions towards the heroine was more than clear. To use her sexually without taking responsibility for his actions. I felt in the beginning his character wasn't believable in that his intent to hurt those around him was all too clear. Usually people who live that way live in a partial state of denial over their actions at least to oneself. They still perform the act but they either deny that the act was really that bad or that they were that devious. He made no apologies for his actions. Yet at the same time he is hurt. His character has always felt as though he was abandoned.

I was over half way towards completion in reading this book when I really wanted to throw this book up against the wall. The book didn't start to redeem itself until the secret was out. The secret came out in a way that I didn't predict coming and it is one of the best scenes in the book. After that point book more than made up for all the frustration that I felt in the beginning. If the plot was not so intriguing I would have given it lower grade. All in all I gave it 4 stars.

A Must Read

Dark Persuasion is set in aristocratic England around the turn of the century and is more than a story of romance. It’s a story of Charlotte’s independence and confidence verses her youthful innocents and inexperience as a result of her blindness caused by a childhood accident.

Two brothers compete for the affection of the Charlotte for totally different reasons. One for sibling rivalry and conquest the other for redemption for his childhood indiscretion. Charlotte doesn't heed the warnings of others and learns that what she sees with her other senses is not the whole truth.

Vicki Hopkins has created characters that you can relate to and feel for. I myself would counting the steps with Charlotte as she entered a room, try to smelling the scent of the flowers in the room, or close my eyes and try to describe a color.

This award winning novel is one of Vicki Hopkins best works and is a must read.

Literary, etc Review

I'm not a big fan of authors who are upfront and state the history of central characters and how they are connected. This approach can be either hit or miss, but in the case of Dark Persuasion, Vicki Hopkins does an amazing job setting up the plot and it defiantly is needed to understand the particular actions of certain characters.

Charlotte Grey was a child when an accident left her blind and she's surprised her aristocratic neighbors are interested in being her sponsors and hold a ball in her honor. At the ball she meets two brothers, Patrick and Rupert, who are different as night and day. Both will battle for her hand, but which brother will win her heart and can a wrong be rectified?

Hopkins does an excellent job with historical research. She introduces Braille to the point of having Rupert translate a letter he wrote to Charlotte. There's also the mention of guide dogs and although the time period is 1890 (the first official use of guide dogs from my own personal research indicates they were first used during World War I in Germany), I can let it go because in literature prior to the 19th century, in a few texts, they mention the blind being guided by a dog. I'm not sure of the extent of actual guide dogs as we know it prior to the First World War and I'm not nitpicking on the historical aspects because as I stated Hopkins does a superb job. She also keeps to social etiquette of the time and the language used doesn't sound too modern.

Characters are well developed and you can easily see how two brothers become rivals. At the heart of the novel is Charlotte's blindness and although she can't see the world around her, she believes she can trust her own instinct. She tries to be independent and her family allows her the freedom she wants, but also cautions her. Like most young women she truly believes she can read people and their intentions. Rupert talks to her and she likes that he's interested in getting to know her, whereas Patrick doesn't say anything to her, but he has a reason for keeping quiet and keeping her at a distance. She believes someone opening themselves is how to truly communicate with one another. Your heart breaks for her and all she lost. In one poignant scene, she wishes she could see the face of the man she married. And in another scene her husband doesn't quite realize what it would be like to be married to a blind woman until Charlotte's sister is sitting next to them at the wedding breakfast and she's helping Charlotte eat. He looks down at her place setting and he sees pieces of food all over as she attempts to eat.

What I really liked about Dark Persuasion is that Hopkins gives us a villain, who in the end repents for his actions. Sure it's not the way we would like him to do it, but he realizes his follies and tries to atone for the way he acted towards Charlotte. There's a twist at the end that I wasn't expecting, but overall it's a satisfying read.

Please note: there is some history of abuse and if you are sensitive to particular situations you might not be comfortable reading this book. It's not detailed, but it is mentioned and explained.

If you're in a historical romance rut I highly recommend Dark Persuasion.

About the Author
David Amram has composed more than one hundred orchestral and chamber works; written many scores for Broadway theater and film, including the classic scores for the films Splendor in the Grass and The Manchurian Candidate; composed two operas, including the ground-breaking Holocaust opera The Final Ingredient; and composed the score for the landmark 1959 documentary Pull My Daisy, narrated by Jack Kerouac. He is the author of the books Vibrations, an autobiography, Offbeat: Collaborating with Kerouac, and Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat." A pioneer of jazz French horn and World Music, he is also a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from twenty-five countries. He is also an inventive, funny improvisational lyricist. He has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, who chose him as the New York Philharmonic’s first composer-in-residence in 1966, Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, Charles Mingus, Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Depp, Tito Puente, and many others. Amram = inspirational

First, this memoir is a great read. Amram is a wonderfully engaging writer. It also gives a great impression of a restless young man learning his craft. Amram's formative years found him on the fringes of the Beats, at the early days of bebop and Joe Papp's Public Theatre. He played and wrote and drank and jammed and dated and whipped up crazy recipes and let a drifting crowd of artists crash on his floor. The book traces his growth as an artist from youthful excess and aimlessness to mature musician and composer. Totally recommended for young artists in any field. Amram is constantly positive and enthusiastic and for all his adventures and wanderings, he always ALWAYS put the music first. Very inspiring book.

A magical pilgrimage

Nobel prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez continues spinning his own brand of magical realism into captivating tales with his Doce cuentos peregrinos. The stories border on reality and the unconcious, giving them a "sonambulo" feel. They are also very cinemographic and five have been made into movies and a TV series. Anyone who has ever seen "Milagro en Roma" must read "La santa"--the story on which the movie is based. This collection is a must-have!

Fun, Easy Read

I read this in the original German....I hope the inaccurate cover (in the book, she is reborn as a beagle, not a great dane) does not speak to the quality of the translation....

All I can say is that it is a fun run, not very accurate when it comes to animal life or even religion, but it ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE.

Read it for enjoyment, not enlightenment, and you will have a fun time reading it.

It's a good book

Ok, it's not an excellent book but it was enjoyable and it got me thinking and I like that about a book - one that stays with you for a while after you've read it. I figure if you walk away from a book and never give it a moment's thought, then I don't think you learned from it and it thus failed you in some way. This book got me thinking about my own "karma" and how I live my life and whether or not I deserve something better in the "afterlife". And I'm still thinking... so that's a good thing!

Now I do think that if you are going to write/read a book about the afterlife, then in some way to the reader, it should be believable. I seem to have a read a few lately - I liked the ghost in Twenties Girl and loved Molly Marx in The Late Lamented Molly Marx because I could "deal" with the way they were presented... Not too far fetched, didn't do anything too bizarre other than stick around past their due date. I thought the same about the dead girl in The Lovely Bones until she somehow took over some live girl's body to have sex with her first crush. That's when Alice Sebold lost me... it was just plain stupid/ridiculous.

I would have to say this book is half half... I can believe the first parts but not so much the last... but it's ok because it's meant to be a fun book as it is told with humour.... not a recount of a being murdered and the effect on you and your family. It's good clean fun with a message - that you need to live your life in a good way and be kind to others...

I will be honest - I did not fall in love with the main character and that always helps. I don't know if that is because the book is translated from German to English and things are "lost in translation." I did however, very much like the Casanova character and think his addition was simply brilliant! I am not too fussy about the supposed lack of research involved in ant colonies and lives of guinea pigs (as per the other review) so ok with the way it was written. Same with dogs... Having now read this book and The Art of Racing in the Rain, find it fascinating however that humans are to be aspired to as do believe dogs are more noble characters and perhaps it should be the other way around! All in all, like I said, it's not a great book but it's enjoyable and I liked it.

Nice try - but lacks depth

The very best parts of the book are the glossary and the appendices. The rest is a bunch of information put together in the most sloppy way I have ever seen. In the unlikely event that an editor actually did go through the book before publishing - he or she ought to be fired.

The text is, as far as I can see, a lot of print-outs from a spreadsheet, collected in overall categories and given a spiral back. Then sold at $150 !!!

The information is given in a list-format, with a keyword and the appropriate factors of relevance for a given section

For example: On page 8, section "chemical compounds", dynamite is listed, as an explosive, not a chemical warfare agent, and as a secondary explosive.

So far, so good - but the very same information is repeated in the next 13 lines in the very same table (?!?).

There are numerous examples of such duplicate information, which all in all becomes very tiresome.

The format is a good idea, sections with overall topics, "compounds" "pyrotechnics" and so on, and then a keyword based 'look it up' list of basic information.

So in the end two stars: One for the format, and one for the appendices.

Great compilation, use it for design

A very comprehensive distillation of experimental polymer property knowledge into data that can be used to predict properties of polymers where no experimental data exist. Fairly accurate and a great way to explore what-if scenarios to tweak existing polymers to enhance certain traits. An invaluable reference that relates structure to properties. Includes work by Van Krevelen and other giants in the field. I use it in combination with Polymer-CAD software to create some polymers that are, to say the least, very challenging to synthesize. Looking at buying the Fourth Edition soon.

Get your stitcheries on!

If you like cute adorable stitcheries, well then you'll love this book. Page after page of sweet lil pic's that has inspired me stitch. This book is bringing the funk back into embroidery. It is jam packed with ideas and nearly all the designs in it are easy enough for beginners. Luckily for me I bought it for myself for Christmas and what a treat it is indeed. I havent got anything negative to say about the book, only you wont regret having one of these books in your collection to inspire you :-)

Vicki has written an inspirational book filled with designs with a vintage feel. If you love to embroider and you enjoy a vintage look, this book will be a good buy for you. The instructions are clear and there are pointer for setting up a sewing area. Great book!
