OLD SCHOOL HARD SCIENCE FICTION

The hard science fiction novel Encounter with Tiber is an excellent example of the genre. It is literally packed with interesting science, engineering, and technological explanations.

It is basically two interwoven stories. The human part is in the present and near future (say, 60-70 years) and is concerned with the activities and people involved with the revived human attempts at space exploration and colonization. Two factors spur their efforts on: the privatization of space technology; and the reception of signals from a planet in the planetary system of Alpha Centauri A, part of a binary star system that’s about 4.3 light years (about 25.4 x 1012 miles or 43.0 x 1012 kilometers) away from Earth. The planet of origin of the signals is eventually named Tiber and its inhabitants become known as Tiberians.

The alien or Tiberian part of the book describes the extraterrestrials’ history, culture, biology & physiology, and political institutions in some detail. Because their planet is about to be rendered uninhabitable within a couple of centuries, they have been sending out robot probes to nearby star systems in a search for a suitable planet or planets to which they can migrate. Such a probe has previously examined Earth, and the transmitted data is so promising that a “manned” expedition is sent to reconnoiter the planet in person.

These two parts are woven together by a historian who is on the human starship that’s traveling to the Tiberians’ home system in the late 21st Century.

One character in particular, whom I guess was supposed to be a sympathetic character, was the astronaut and astronomer Chris Terence. Initially, he seems to be a highly competent astronaut and a sympathetic character. However, he proves himself to be supremely arrogant; he apparently thinks that the taxpayers should be happy to spend billions of dollars (with no expectation of any return whatsoever) solely so that scientists like him can "do science" and discover "what matters." In a later part of the book, Chris Terence proclaims that, in the 19th Century, the entire American West from Texas to Washington (state), should have been left "unspoiled," a fertile playground for anthropologists, geologists, and naturalists. Such an elitist hostility toward development turned me profoundly against him. But, hey, that's just my opinion. There is one scary possibility, however. Could Terence's elitist "pure science" attitude be NASA's official position today? That certainly would explain their less than stellar performance, over the last forty years, in advancing real (manned) space exploration, industrialization, and development.

I thought that it was quite astute of the authors to have the Tiberians’ actions on Earth serve as the seeds of various religious myths that would eventually be passed down through the millennia by humans. This was not done explicitly, but it was easy to pick out certain scenes (the runaway lander, the pillar of fire, the flood, the burning bush, the hovering lander(s), and the Tiberians’ weapons) and imagine how the orally transmitted accounts of these events could have been distorted and embellished over time.

I've noticed that, in about 20% of the reviews of Encounter with Tiber, readers are complaining about the science, engineering, and technology that are liberally scattered throughout the book. Well, HELLO...! That's why it's called SCIENCE fiction.

Wild, Exciting Ride!

I'm a sucker for military action books so I pre-ordered Tier One Wild and eagerly devoured it as soon as it dropped onto my Kindle. I ordered this book for its entertainment value and was not disappointed despite having elevated expectations after reading Mr. Fury's previous two books. It is a wild, action packed, can't-put-it-down read which puts it right on the edge of being a 5-star effort.

HOWEVER... while the author's raw talent is clearly on display, I'm a little surprised he still exhibits the rough edges of an FNG author: some of the characters are woefully underdeveloped, a few characters who figure prominently for a few chapters -- and *are* well developed -- disappear suddenly without a trace, and the climax of the story happens literally at the end and there is no resolution phase (Fury did this with his previous book too -- and no, the epilogue of Black Site was a prelude to this book, not the resolution to the last one). From my perspective, this lack of resolution leaves me somewhat frustrated at the end of an otherwise excellent book which is why I'm only giving it four stars.

Dear Mr. Fury: as a former operator you know the value of teamwork and letting folks who are specialists in skills you don't have to do the tasks you cannot. Please, please, *PLEASE* team up with an experienced fiction writer and/or writing coach who can help you take your skills from "pretty darn good" to "tier one" before you publish your next book.

He's Back !!!

I was lucky enough to recieve Tier One Wild before it hit the shelves and finished reading it a few weeks ago. Kolt is back and this time you're in for an even Wilder ride than in Black Site. Dalton Fury has once again delivered a heart pounding, palm sweating, grab you by the collar ACTION novel that reads so good I wasn't able to stop even when I told myself I would 3 pages ago. The realistic descriptives of every detail paints a vivid picture page to page and twists and surprises from every angle. The ride with Kolt and his new team on missions is sure to leave you just like it left me, wanting a 3rd book from Dalton Fury and wanting it in a hurry !!! Tier One Wild was worth every penny, enjoy.

Mr. Furys first two books were amazing and this one is no different. I would highly highly recommend this book and his other two to anyone looking for a exciting and all around great read. I really hope we keep getting more. Between Dalton Furry and Brad Taylor we are lucking out with badass authors. If they could talk Peter Blaber into writing again we would be set!

Essential Reading

Adler, like Jung, studied under Freud and reluctantly broke with him as Freud became, you guessed it, neurotic about his world view. Like the writings of Jung, this book provides page after page or insights and revelations. However, Adler's theories lack the drama and big picture (Star Wars) of Carl Jung's collective unconsious, so he does not have the cult following that Jung developed. This book is practical - full of "ah-ha" moments. It is easy to apply to others but the real revelations are in applying it to oneself. After all, most of us are neurotic to varying degrees. I enjoyed this book over summaries and shortened formats because it is going right to the source. I would note that Adler places homosexuality as a neurosis - obviously this is not the mainstream view today by psychiatric professionals. But if you can just put that in its place as of his times without letting it distract from his main thesis (that the origin of neurosis is a need to reclaim lost power) then his unwrapping of the argument should give a few hours of great pleasure to you.

This is an inexplicably overlooked classic. Published during the years that also saw the publication of Freud's Introductory Lectures, Jung's Symbols of Transformation and Husserl's Phenomenology, it ranks with and, indeed, may surpass them in its nuanced and comprehensive grasp of human nature. Adler's psychology, as represented in this masterpiece is so rich and subtle that it deserves the sort of ressourcement scholarship or 'return to Adler' that has so enriched other contemporary schools of thought. Adler himself turned to the past; he revered the 'canon', the great literary and philosophical works of the Western tradition. -- see, for example his essay on Dostoevski or his regular refernces and allusions to Nietzsche. Alexander Neuer, one of his most astute interpreters, said that Adler had created a modern psychology of what the Greeks called thymos. The novelist Manes Sperber said that Adler showed us both the "incredible insignificance" of and "incomparable grandeur of humanity." The truth of Sperber's judgment shines through in this irreplaceable book. Highly recommended.
