Leadership Is About Liberating People

On page one of Leadership Is an Art Max Depree writes, "The book is about the art of leadership: liberating people to do what is required of them in the most effective and humane way possible". This is a theme that runs throughout this very wise and in every way excellent work. The following quotes provide some of the flavor of Depree's enlightened and inspiring thinking:

* The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor.

* In addition to all of the ratios and goals and parameters and bottom lines, it is fundamental that leaders endorse a concept of persons. This begins with an understanding of the diversity of people's gifts and talents and skills.

* Understanding and accepting diversity enables us to see that each of us is needed. It also enables us to begin to think about being abandoned to the strengths of others, of admitting that we cannot know or do everything.

* Leaders don't inflict pain; they bear pain.

* First, as a Christian I believe that each person is made in the image of God. For those of us who have received the gift of leadership from the people we lead, this belief has enormous implications.

* Leaders owe people space, space in the sense of freedom. Freedom in the sense of enabling our gifts to be exercised.

* Participative management is not democratic. Having a say differs from having a vote.

* Interestingly, though in organizations like ours we need a lot of freedom, there is no room for license. Discipline is what it takes to do the job.

* One of the important things leaders need to learn is to recognize the signals of impending deterioration.

* Without forgiveness, there can be no real freedom to act...

Depree has given us an abiding philosophy of leadership. Actually operating in alignment with these principles demands a very high level of integrity - one that few leaders ever do attain. Those that do so unleash forces of transformation resulting in high performance high involvement organizations.

Awesome leadership book!

I started out reading this book as an assignment for one of my doctorate class. Once I read the book I truly enjoyed it! The author pulls you in with his stories. I would definitely recommend this book. With his Christian background as a guide from his upbringing, he truly understands what a great leader is and should be...one whom makes others feel like family and everyone is treated equally no matter who you are. Awesome book and easy to read!

Surprisingly good

This is a very engaging story. You like the characters and the story moves along at a good pace. Magical creatures galore. But..........if the author does not know how to spell, surely her computer has Spell Check. And if she doesn't have Spell Check, surely she has a friend who can proofread the books for her. Very poorly edited. She gave us a vile of poison. Not a vial, but a vile. And called it a vile all thru the scene.
I am currently in Book 3 and have already read a spoiler in one of the reviews. I don't mind spoilers, but now I am going to be wondering when one of the main characters is going to die.
I just finished the series. Cliff hangers all over the place, but a very satisfactory ending. The main character I thought would die, did, and I even shed a tear for them. The first book is the one with all the spelling errors - books 2, 3 & 4 improved considerably.

I am so glad I got the whole set, I don't think I could of waited if I had just got the first book in this series. Loved this wonderful journey that Kiora, Emane and Alcander embark on. Magical creatures galore!! I laughed, sighed and giggled throughout. And then the author made me cry!! Dam it!!! I yelled at my kindle following my breakdown. This series is so well written that it pulls you in so you feel apart of the story. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to feel the story come to life.! And after the ending I don't think I can stay mad at the author for that, YOU KNOW WHICH PART. Awesome

As I'm writing my review my heart is hurting I never thought it would hurt so much, I have this book for over a month but since I had a feeling about Emane I prolonged my reading. My heart is in million pieces I but the ending boy the ending was brilliant I just wished it had a little different with him in it. I love this story it really got to me, I can't believe it took me this long to grab this book and now that I did is so hard to let go.

Through the lens of Toshié's life, Simon Partner shows us the realities of rural Japanese life during the 1930s depression; daily existence under the wartime regime of "spiritual mobilization"; the land reform and its consequences during occupation; and the rapid emergence of a consumer culture against the background of agricultural mechanization during the 1950s and 1960s. In some ways representative and in other ways unique, Toshié's narrative raises questions about conventional frameworks of twentieth-century Japanese history, and about the place of individual agency and choice in an era often seen as dominated by the impersonal forces of modernity: technology, state power, and capitalism.

A well-written history of rural life in 20th century Japan

In his book "Toshie", Simon Partner provides a detailed account of village life throughout 20th century Japan. The historical and sociological information is carefully selected; each piece deepens the reader's understanding of the life of Toshie and her fellow villagers. Partner's observations on World War II, village life, and the rise of consumer culture in Japan are all welcome additions to the study of Japanese history. The real strength of the book, however, is Partner's vivid descriptions. From the beginning, one feels as if they are looking over the shoulder of the midwife during the birth of the protagonist, Toshie. These fine descriptions continue throughout the book and one can nearly breathe the fresh village air or sweat alongside the farmers and laborers as they toil into the night.
For anyone who is interested in Japanese history, village life, or simply looking for a good read, I highly reccomend this book.

Best Book on Village Life in Japan

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. I am a third generation Japanese American(sansei) born and raised in Hawaii. My grandparents came here from Niigata ken, which is the setting of the book, around the turn of the 20th century. They came as laborers to work in the sugar plantations. Therefore I found the details about village life in Niigata very relevant to their experiences in America.
I have read many accouns of life in the Japanese countryside through the years ("Shinohata", "Village Japan", and "A Far Valley" come to mind). But Partner's book is the best I have read because of the combination of historical and sociological data. It is also filled with sensitivity to the lives of Toshie and others in her village.
I recently visited Niigata for the first time. Of course, spending two days there as a tourist did not give me as much of an in-depth look as I would have liked. But I will go back again, partly because Partner's work has increased my level of awareness.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Usually I read three or four books at a time because I find most don't hold my interest that well, but I devoured this book in two days. I was drawn to the unique and interesting story line, and rather easy to read approach that Charles A. Dalton Jr. uses to draw the reader into the mythical world of Regeion. I recommend this book for all those who enjoy a good read filled with adventure and mythical creatures.

Extraordinary storytelling at its very best!!!

Sun Nimrod and the Shadows in the Valley is one of the best fantasy/adventure stories that I have read... Very engaging story. I love the symbolism and example that the main character portrays... A man who was blessed with many talents and yet unselfishly uses them to serve others.
