I Can Dance tells of a child diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy who achieved education (bachelor's and master's degree), friendships, family, and professional employment as teacher and administrator. Throughout, the author speaks with frank intimacy about her life with a disability, the good, the bad, and the sometimes strange and surprising. I Can Dance will open eyes and hearts to the potential of people with even severe physical disabilities and show a unique and vibrant individual growing and thriving amidst challenges and opportunities in the lively background of the 1960s and 1970s and beyond, from childhood to grandparenthood. This is a life lived fully and told with enthusiasm. Foreword by Catherine Campisi, former Director, California Department of Rehabilitation, and disability advocate.

Swing Dancing Through Life
By Carol Anita Ryan
When I imagine the author of this memoir dancing, I see East Coast Swing. She's doing a complicated air-borne feat defying gravity at an amazing pace, hitting the beats perfectly.
Laurie grew up with a disability that progresses (one of the forms of Muscular Dystrophy), but that never seemed to keep her from enjoying life, and living as she wanted. She grew up as opportunities came along for disabled people with the right attitudes. I'm about a decade older than Laurie and there were no disabled students in my schools. Without elevators, ramps, etc. it would have been impossible of course. But without people like Laurie pushing for mainstreaming in schools, it wouldn't have ever happened.
In this extremely candid book, you'll learn about all aspects of Laurie's life. She's frank about needing help with every bodily function. She had to get help in ways most of us will never have to deal with and she had to do so at an age when common sense and personal boundaries weren't yet well established. There were some difficult consequences. But, somehow Laurie remains upbeat and keeps moving forward, like a dancer who briefly misses a beat but goes on to continue the dance gracefully.
Laurie has accomplished much. After reading this book, I'm eager to see what's next!

A Candid Memoir
By Cheryl Anne Stapp, Author of Disaster & Triumph: Sacramento Women, Gold Rush Through the Civil War
Laurie Hoirup couldn't write her memoir like others are able to do: with pen & quill on a yellow pad, or pecked out on an obsolete IBM Selectric, or with any version of a modern computer keyboard. She had to dictate the rough draft, and use similar technology to revise and edit. Amazing, one might think, that she produced such a clear, well-written, 245-page account of her life from childhood through adolescence, college, marriage, and motherhood--all lived, and achieved, with a form of muscular dystrophy. Well . . . less "amazing" when we consider that she holds two college degrees and is professionally successful as a teacher and administrator. And there's more than that. Laurie's candid memoir lets the world know that people with disabilities can and do live normal lives filled with the same dreams and hopes, accomplishments and disappointments; the same silly childish experiences with friends and the same grown-up pleasures and concerns that all women share. Can she dance? You bet.

An amazing story from an equally amazing woman.
By Tara Wright
I know Laurie through my mom who used to work for her at an independent living center in southern California. They've now been friends for years. She's an amazing woman. I am disabled myself, but nowhere near to the extent Laurie is, and I use her example every day as how I want to be. I don't think I've ever seen her unhappy or down. She does everything she sets her mind to, which is more than can be said of 90% of the able-bodied population. This book offers a great insight into her life and her world, explaining the challenges she faces on a daily basis. It's a book that everyone should read, if only to gain empathy into the lives of the disabled, but also from which to glean inspiration. You won't find this book to be depressing at all. It's just like the woman.....amazingly inspirational and candid almost to a fault. She's anything but shy, and someone I think you'll come to admire and enjoy every bit as much as her close friends and family do.
