What a comprehensive collection of pop up books and paper engineers from our wonderful order of dimensional book lovers. I think it is just great that these books are being purchased by libraries. Years ago I traveled to the 4 corners of our state of New Mexico to teach workshops to librarians who hosted an incredible after school program for children and teachers. Teaching 3D design and acquainting everyone at how easy it is to incorporate moveable books into all programming was so much fun for everyone and the samples that came out of the courses was amazing. THANK YOU NANCY and RHONDA for your inclusion and your interest in paper engineering!

A wonderful romance

I really enjoyed this book, and I hadn't expected to get so caught up in the characters' story. I learned a lot about a dark historical period in gay history, and I wish this butch-femme romance would never end, because there aren't enough B/F books out there and each one is special.
Also, the romance in this was really hot and realistic, and I couldn't put it down. The rockabillly era really came alive for me and I fell for Rosario also. Don't be fooled by the cover though, this is a fully fleshed-out romance with a real story arc and lots of drama, not a simplistic erotica novel (although be forewarned that the intimate scenes would make any erotica writer blush).

I'm all for interracial lesbian books and this was one on the best one's i've read. The story flowed really good. Not to fast, not to slow. Diana and Rosario are just great characters. I loved watching their relationship grow through the course of the book.

if your looking for a flowery romance then this is not the read for you instead it tells of how the marginalised in society of the 50's whither that be irish, hispanic, african-american or gay were treated and makes you wonder has much changed in 2012.

Detailed case descriptions of high performing companies

This book tells the story of eight extremely successful companies that manage to bring out the best in their people. The stories are detailed descriptions of the company's backgrounds, strategies, systems and management practices. The stories are also larded with quotes from the company's CEO's, HR managers and employees. Following this approach the authors provide the readers the opportunity to form their own hypotheses about the companies' successes. But the authors also present their interpretations of the case studies.
What these studies show is how these high performing companies have achieved their success by aligning their values, strategies and people. This is something which is easy to understand but hard to do. It requires consistent articulation and implementation of the values and vision and a relentless attention to detail in ensuring that all policies and practices support the company's values. In order to be able to show this kind of consistency a real belief and commitment are needed and a willingness to persevere.
This book shows how high performing companies consciously turn a lot of the conventional management wisdom upside down. For instance:
1. Contrary to what many people now think, recruiting, selecting and retaining unique talent is NOT the prime source of competitive advantage. Although these activities are important, the examples of these extraordinary companies show that it is much more important to build a culture and work system that enables all people to use their talents and develop their talents. A byproduct of this will be that your company will also be better at attracting and retaining people.
2. Values first instead of strategies. The conventional view puts competitive strategy on top and derives from that what structure is needed, what competencies and behaviors are needed and so on. The companies described here work differently. Although they do have competitive strategies these are secondary to their set of guiding values and to the alignment of these values with their management practices. In other words: they have a values-based view of strategy.
3. Respectful and trusting way of dealing with people. Many companies monitor, check and try to control employee behavior. The hidden value companies work differently. In the spirit of Douglas McGregor's book The Human Side of Enterprise, they seem to understand that if you begin by designing systems to protect against the small unmotivated minority, you end up alienating the motivated majority. So they put their people first by treating them respectfully, involving them and trusting them.
Lessons like the ones presented in this book can be found in several other books by for instance Jeffrey Pfeffer himself, David Maister and Jim Collins. What makes this book different and interesting to me is the presentation in the form of detailed case descriptions.

The "Value" of this book is certainly "Hidden" from me......

This book is merely a compilation of case studies. There are few -- if any -- check lists, tables, charts, bullet points, or step-by-step methodologies to help you implement the concepts within your own company or organization. In fact, THERE ARE ONLY 21 PAGES not dedicated exclusively to either a case study and/or an analysis of the various case studies presented within the book. Save your money and purchase "The HR Scorecard", "The Talent Solution", or "Aligning Pay and Results" instead. Very disappointing...

Acorns, Oak Trees, and Common Sense

One of the greatest challenges facing organizations today is attracting and then keeping "the best and the brightest" people they can. Then, there is another great challenge to develop their talents and skills. Here is one of the best books I have read thus far which addresses the second challenge directly...and indirectly, addresses the first challenge as well (pun intended). O'Reilly and Pfeffer organize their material within a series of chapters, each of which (presented as a case history) focuses on eight exemplary companies (e.g. Cisco Systems, The Men's Wearhouse, and Southwest Airlines). The authors utilize a basic format (introduction, background, values, philosophy and spirit, etc.) which enables their reader to draw relevant comparisons and contrasts. They also summarize key points at the end of each chapter.
After extensive involvement with several of the exemplary companies, I can personally attest that organizations such as they which effectively develop the "hidden value" in their employees achieve at least three highly desirable (indeed imperative) objectives: they create a workplace environment in which people at all levels are much happier as well as much more productive; as a result, they have less attrition of their "best and brightest"; and finally, they are much more successful when competing for the "human capital" they need. To their credit, O'Reilly and Pfeffer do not promise to offer all manner of "secrets" to simplify the process of attracting and developing talent. Everything they suggest is common sense and much of it is obvious. The "hidden value" of their book is revealed only as you correlate all the ideas and experiences it provides within the context of your past and current circumstances.
If you agree that an organization should be value-driven and that values are driven by people, almost everything O'Reilly and Pfeffer share can be of substantial assistance. But I presume to conclude with three caveats. First, what they recommend is relatively simple to explain but will be immensely difficult (if not impossible) to implement without a firm commitment, sufficient time, and (yes) patience. Second, given the wealth of information provided, beware of massive adoption of what may have been effective elsewhere. Rather, select only what is most appropriate to your organization's needs when formulating a model. Finally, keep in mind that all of the eight exemplary companies have changed, some quite significantly, since the period during which this book was written. So must yours in months and years to come.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't get into this at all. An Alien stripper with hot and cold issues....If ever there was a book that made me feel like smashing my Kindle, this was it. I think I'll re-read the Hirachi books.

Brian Brown has worked as an emergency 24 hour lecturing service in a number of Midlands universities before joining De Montfort where he is programme leader in psychology.

Paul Crawford trained as a psychiatric nurse before completing a PhD in English Literature at the University of Birmingham. He is author of the critically acclaimed novel, Nothing Purple, Nothing Black and a work of literary criticism, Politics and History in William Golding.

Carolyn Hicks has pursued a long and distinguished career spanning disciplines such as educational psychology, health psychology and health service studies. At Birmingham university she combines her interests in these topics by specializing in the study of education for health service personnel and is involved in producing educational materials for health care researchers.

Emotional

This book is emotional, which is sometimes all a romance reader wants. For those who want a reasonably consistent heroine, this book leaves a lot to be desired. I started out really liking Heidi and feeling for her situation, her husband tragically killed, bringing up a troubled son. She seemed deep and mature, someone you could root for.

Then the hottie cop shows up and she instantly starts giggling, touching, flirting--only to brutally slap him down without explanation when he works up the nerve to follow up on these signals by romantically buying her flowers and asking her out. Then, when he comes back around solely to help her son, she starts coming on to him again, physically snuggling against him--and is infuriated with his perceived lack of a response. What happened to the woman I liked and wanted to root for?!

Then there's the hero of this story who has his own tragedy to deal with. This is the most emotional guy I've ever come across. He has highly unlikely touchy-feely moments with almost every man in his life, and of course every woman. When he breaks down and cries it has lost all of it's impact because of how emotional he's been throughout: blushing, trembling, stomach flipping, voice shaking.... This doesn't feel like the kind of guy who'd be interested in becoming a cop.

The story is predictable, but not obnoxiously so. Her vicious, gloating reaction to his pain when the truth comes out pretty much finished any sympathy I had for her. And his decision to have sex with her before making sure of his suspicions about who she really was is kind of creepy. In the end this fell waaay short. But I'm giving it three stars because I've learned that romance readers are willing to put up with a lot, as long as its emotional, and this story is very emotional.

If there would have been six stars I would have given this book 6 stars. Its deffinetly a 5 star read

If it were possible to give this book 6 stars I would. The characters are rich and fully developed.The story is about a woman and her son, three years after the woman's husband died in a terrible car crash. They meet a police officer who had spent the last three years after accidently killing someone. The three of them start to change and become happy again until....... You really don't want me to tell you what happens. I will only say when the book ended I was crying Happy tears, but I had also been crying sad tears. then it was over and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what else happened to those characters, that I had come to love. Its well worth the read.

A new series, and I want more from the Kensington Family

This book is first in a family series, there are eight Kensington children so I am hoping that each one gets a book. Shane and Heidi both have tragedies that they are still grieving from when they meet, I realized that there was a connection in their history early on and it broke my heart. As they fell in love and you sit on the edge of your seat waiting for one of them to figure out how their pasts are connected my heart broke some more for them.

As an added bonus the point of view was alternating (which is my favorite) and a bit of suspense to the storyline. I normally don't write about grammatical errors unless it is really bad, but since this is a first book for this author I want to point out that there were no grammatical or misspellings errors that I noticed.

A Hacker's Thoughts on cyberSecurity

Speaking as someone who once spent three months behind bars for computer hacking, I can vouch for the authenticity of this book. It should scare you right out of your socks.
And it's not the technical details that should scare you, though there's enough of that. It's the simple "social engineering" that can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. A good hacker doesn't need to touch a computer - he just picks his target, gains a bit of information and uses others to do the dirty work, all unsuspecting. By the time you work out you are under attack, someone has taken out a second mortgage on your home, cashed in your life insurance, raided your credit cards and had a hell of a good time at your expense.
Here are case studies to demonstrate it. people driven to bankruptcy, despair and suicide.
Get a firewall on your computer right NOW. And do all the other things this book advises.
Otherwise you are a mug.
Don't figure it won't happen to you - if you are at all active in cyberspace, then you are leaving footprints behind that can be picked up and exploited by a hacker looking for his next target.
Buy this book - it will be the best handful of dollars you ever spent.

Terrorism Research Center Review of Cybershock

Cybershock: Surviving Hackers, Phreakers, Identity Thieves, Internet Terrorists and Weapons of Mass Disruption by Winn Schwartau is an enlightening look at the dangers of the Internet from a consumer/ general user perspective. If I had one book to give friends and family that demonstrates the types of threats they need to be aware of in the information age, it would be Schwartau's Cybershock. Winn wrote this book for the mass market and he never strays from his target audience. He makes no apologies to those who are familiar with technology and security when he provides real-life examples of information security horror stories involving fraud or identity theft that many might label as fear mongering. Winn's stories are personal because he has been a victim and many of his friends and relatives have been targeted as well. One of Winn's major objectives in writing this book was to advance ideas on privacy and Internet rights, and many of the examples point the reader in a specific direction. However, Winn doesn't hide the fact that he is trying to be somewhat controversial to raise awareness on specific issues. The book, after all is entitled Cybershock, not Cybercalm. As an added bonus, the book also provides some interesting historical perspectives as Winn describes and interviews individuals who were visionaries offering information security services or predicted new threats before they emerged.
